THE HORSE RACE FOR GOVERNOR

It’s still three years away, but political pundits around the Capitol are already prognosticating about the 2010 race for Governor. Democratic blogger Steve Maviglio, of The California Majority Report, says L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is the prohibitive favorite, despite a recent public breakup with his wife. “He’s still the guy that’s holding L.A. together” says Maviglio, noting the mayor has won control of the L.A. school board.

Moving up the ranks, according to Maviglio, is Attorney General Jerry Brown of Oakland, who climbs from sixth to second. “I’ve seen some polling showing he leads everybody else,” including Antonio Villaraigosa, notes Maviglio. Brown still has incredible name ID – not surprising, since Brown was in fact Governor of California more than twenty years ago.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom drops to third in the Maviglio forecast, while State Treasurer Bill Lockyer of Hayward is 4th and Lt. Governor John Garamendi is 5th, despite plenty of publicity for naming “Delta and Dawn”, the two wayward whales. The highest ranking woman on the list is former State Senator Jackie Speier of San Francisco. She now #9, up from 13. And new to the list now is Susan Kennedy, who just happens to be Chief of Staff to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maviglio ranks the Bay Area Democrat at #15 and chuckles when saying, “Heck, she’s doing the job anyway. Why not just run for the office and make it official?”

On the Republican side, most pundits believe Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner of the Bay Area is the clear favorite.

9-11 FUND NEVER USED

June 15, 2007

$7 MILLION WAITING TO BE SPENT:
After the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., California created a memorial license plate fund for anti-terrorism training. The colorful plates have been popular and generated $7.2 million thus far (click on the link below to see the license plate..it’s the second one from the top).

But guess how much has been spent on the special fund?

Zero. Nada. Absolutely nothing.

WASTED OPPORTUNITY

That’s right, the money that was supposed to go to hiring and training extra law enforcement officers and purchasing special equipment has collected nothing but dust. After five years, California has yet to use the money or even develop a plan for spending it.

A bill by Senator Betty Karnette (D) Long Beach, would change all that. AB 587 directs the Office of Emergency Services to figure out a way to put those funds to work. Karnette’s bill has strong bipartisan support and passed the Assembly 73 -4.

Karnette says, “California drivers have tried to put the brakes on terrorism by investing seven million hard-earned dollars. We need to reward their investment by demanding annual accountability for how that money is used.”

SICKO COMES TO SACTO

June 5, 2007

CAPITOL DEBUT: “Sicko”, the new Michael Moore film blasting the American healthcare system will debut not in Hollywood but in Sacramento, for maximum political exposure. Moore will attend the red carpet screening next Tuesday, June 12th in the Capitol City with Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D) Los Angeles.

Nunez is the author of Assembly Bill 8 that promises to overhaul California’s healthcare system. Moore will also testify at a Capitol legislative briefing and is also likely to support another healthcare measure by Senator Sheila Kuehl (D) Santa Monica. SB 840 is supported by the California Nurses Association.
